This study does not claim to summarize the immense franciscan epic, in a very abbreviated way, but to think of the evangelic way in break with the identitary journey. After the evocation of the evangelic journey according to Francis of Assisi, we sketch at first a typology of the franciscan journeys in counterpoint of the identitary journey: the simultaneously evangelic, diplomatic and trade journey, the journey of the others (of those who come to our meeting, as that of Rabban Saumâ, from Peking to Paris), the informative journey or of espionage, the sapiential journey, the testimonial journey, the wonderful journey, the hermeneutic journey (Giovanni de’ Marignolli), and the disturbing journey, with the discovery of the New World. We sketch some later forms of journey in the period defined to put better in prospect those who precede them and the question of the practical and textual reception.

Iacopone da Todi: «nova et vetera»
II.10.01.02

Nova et vetera: the author alludes to ancient quotes (the oldest ones!) about Iacopone of Todi, which have been completly ignored untill now, and for this reason they are mentioned as “new”. He proposes some laudes (praises) well-known, some of them are already published (or incorrectly published), and now they are submitted with their meticolous hand-writing. These laudes are gleaned from some codices of XIVth century of the Library of Sacro Convento in Assisi, with some surprising details. Finally, the author indicates two codices of the XVth century which aren’t refered also in the last catalogue on Iacopone’s books and that is edited recently.

The study concern the relationships among the «Serassi», famous «organari bergamaschi» (1720-1895) and the well known organist «Padre Davide» from Bergamo (Felice Moretti, 1791-1863). From their long and sincere friendship was born a respect that has produced one of the most important works of the italian «organaria» history: the magnificent Serassi (1824-1838, op 537), situated in the basilica «Santa Maria di Campagna» of Piacenza. From the copious correspondence (29 letter from 1822 tho 1862) of Father Davide to the Serassi professionalism, competence, honesty and sincerity emerge in the relationships of the famous monk with the well-knowm «organari».

Pietro Balestra (1841-1912) francescano e vescovo
II.10.01.04

Both the figure and the work of Pietro Balestra (1841-1912) are certainly worth remembering and deeper knowledge. Born in Valle Argentina (between San Remo and Ventimiglia) from a socially esteemed family, the young boy wanted to join the conventual franciscans: later he became the Parish priest in the church of San Francesco d’Albaro, Genoa, for 30 years where he re-established the Ligurian province of the religious Order. Then he was eleged bishop of Acqui (1895-1900) and archibishop of Cagliari till his death. He showed untiring fervour, pastoral skills, apostolic strain, a very gifted man. He overcame many different difficulties, undergoing persecutions, unavoidable for honest people. Monsignor Balestra’s action as metropolitan of Sardegna was really far-sighted and incisive.

The author discusses two recent publications of Serena Romano dedicated to the presence of Giotto in Padua and in particular in the Basilica del Santo. He examines the issue of the presumed patronage of Enrico Scrovegni on the chapel of St. Catherine, the iconography of the fragmentary fresco cycles in the chapter hall (especially the Martyrdom of the Franciscans in Marrakesh, the Lodge with the saints and prophets) and in the andito della portineria (the two Mystical Trees). The paintings in question are interpreted in close relationship with the culture and the communicative needs of the Franciscans of the Santo who commissioned them.

The 4th International Congress “Scotus”, promoted from “Societas Internationalis Scotistica” with the theme “Regnum hominis et regnum Dei”, has been held on the 24th - 29th September in 1976, at the premises of the Conventual Franciscans, in the Institute of Theology “S. Antonio Dottore”, Padua. During this activity, there was the opening of the Central Palace of the university, and has been organised a lecture in the Giants’ Theatre at the faculty of philosophy.
Fr. Pietro Scapin was the professional recorder and organizer of the Congress, in which, from his unpublished correspondence has been found that he had a very good co-operation with Fr. Carlo Balic´, for the constitution of the Scotus Society, for the organization of the previous congress in Wien in 1970 (also with Fr. Adriano Borak), for the hard work in structuring the “Bollettino”, and for the management of the “Societas Internationalis Scotistica”. Unforgotten is the brotherhood relationship between the two during the difficult last days of life of Fr. Balic´.
From a letter addressed to Fr. Scapin dated 12.04.1973, has been identified that originally the 4th International Congress of the 1976, according to the suggestions of prof. Wolfgang Kluxen, the Congress had to be at München with the theme “De divina acceptatione” regarding the doctrine of Scotus and the Reformers, along with two basic reports of: prof. Werner Dettloff (on the side of Catholics), and prof. Wolfhart Pannenberg (on the side of the Reformers). However, a long internal discussion in the Society has chosen Padua for the 4th Congress, they have been also considered the reasonably great opportunities, and even for a better ample theme (“Regnum hominis et regnum Dei”).
Of the 4th Congress, we have available information relevant to its development and to the theoretically causes, which have been inserted by Fr. Camillo Bérubé into two volumes of Acts, in which the second one contains “sectio specialis” of the work, dedicated to the “Tradizione scotista Veneto-padovana” from ‘300 to ‘800: this is an innovation which teaches the following congresses of the other nations.
